Small overlap front: driver-side

Rating applies to 2016-18 models built after July 2015

Tested vehicle: 2016 Fiat 500X Easy 4-door 4wd

The Fiat 500X was introduced in the 2016 model year. Beginning with 2016 models built after July 2015, the vehicle's front-end structure and front door hinges were modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. At the same time, the computer software was modified to optimize frontal airbag and seat belt pretensioner impact sensing. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.

The dummy's position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver's survival space was maintained reasonably well.

The dummy’s head contacted the frontal airbag but moved too far to the left. The side curtain airbag extended far enough forward to protect the head from contact with side structure.

Intrusion of the instrument panel and door hinge pillar contributed to a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg.

How the driver-side small overlap front test is conducted

Moderate overlap front: original test

Rating applies to 2016-18 models built after July 2015

Tested vehicle: 2016 Fiat 500X Easy 4-door 4wd

The Fiat 500X was introduced in the 2016 model year and is derived from the Jeep Renegade. Beginning with 2016 models built after July 2015, the vehicle's computer software was modified to optimize frontal airbag and seat belt pretensioner impact sensing, primarily for the small overlap frontal test mode, but also to a certain extent for the moderate overlap mode. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Moderate overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Fiat Chrysler as part of frontal crash test verification.
